FAQs
What is a SkyHut?
It is an awesomely designed suspended structure for use on a stand or on natural anchor points. It is prefabricated and portable, making it possible to set up in places with only hike-in access.
How do you get in?
There are lots of options; stairs, ladders, bridges, or webs. Even a mechanical elevator is in the cards. In the case of the SkyHut in the redwoods I use a climbing rope with ascenders and a harness.
What’s it for?
Anything you want or imagine. Hanging with friends, a guest room, short term rental or even a treehouse cabin getaway.
How many rigging points do you need to install it?
It is best to have at least three points to rig the structure. It’s possible to suspend a platform between two vertical structures with upward and downward rigging, but this is more advanced and shouldn't be attempted without professional help.
How big do the trees need to be?
If you are unsure it is best to hire a professional. If you don't have suitable trees use one of our engineered stands.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes, with proper installation and use of railings or protective webbing/nets. And of course children under a certain age should supervised (age depends on maturity and physical ability of child).
Do you need permits?
The structure is completely modular and freestanding. In many places “play structures" do not require permits.
Is it safe to have a party on it?
The structure is rated for a 4000 lb load, but if many people wanted to dance the polka or have a rave on one it would be recommended to get a custom built structure rated for 12000 lb, meeting standards for a commercial space.
Installation
It is recommend that several skilled, able-bodied people work together for the safest and most efficient installation. An engineered stand is offered, but if someone wishes to use natural anchor points such as trees or rocks it is important to have the appropriate knowledge of the strength of the anchor points and rigging of the structure. If you are unsure consult or hire someone that has adequate knowledge in the relevant area of work, such as a professional arborist or rigger. SkyHuts are safe when installed correctly but understanding the potential consequences of an improper installation is important if one intends to install it on their own. Never do something if your are unsure it is safe.
